"To me, personally, Kristin's English teaching has been more than just English teaching. I have learned interpersonal communication skills and interview skills,  which has helped me land great jobs."

Kristin Shoemaker

Kristin Shoemaker has been an educator for 27 years and she loves teaching! Formerly a music teacher, Kristin began volunteering in English language instruction in 2007. She enjoyed connecting with language learners so much that in 2019, she went back to school to become an English language teacher.

Kristin uses the Canadian Language Benchmarks in her practical, real-world approach to language classes. She has taught classes through International House-Vancouver, Kitsilano Neighbourhood House, and Burnaby Neighbourhood House, and is the recipient of a 2020 Vancouver Foundation grant in English language instruction.

In the University of Cambridge English Language Teaching Certificate, Kristin received the Pass A grade, awarded to the top 5% of teaching candidates. She studied Applied Linguistics as a scholarship recipient in the Master of Arts - TESOL program at Hamline University. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree (emphasis in Education) and a Master of Music degree from the University of Minnesota. She received her Bachelor of Music/Psychology degree from Wilfrid Laurier University, where she was awarded the Gold Medal and President’s Scholarship.

Kristin has been teaching online since 2008 and is passionate about using technology to enrich learning. In 2011, she helped launch online instruction programming and teacher training for the largest community music school in the US (MacPhail Center for Music - approximately 15,500 total students). Kristin has presented strategies in online teaching at the Music Teachers National Association and the National Conference of Keyboard Pedagogy. Her research in online instruction has been published by the peer-reviewed Journal of Music, Education, and Technology and by the WebScience Foundation.
